“Wandering re-establishes the original harmony which once existed between man and the universe.” – Anatole France
I love being a journalist. I love meeting new people, I love telling stories and I love the rush of being a reporter. But when you work on deadline for a 24-hour newsroom, the urge to create something wild and unscripted sometimes explodes into blogs like this one. On the record, I’m a straight and narrow writer — a proud target of public vitriol in print, online, and over the air. Off the record, I’m a sarcastic and occasionally introspective traveller with a sense of adventure and flair for the dramatic.
As a journalist, I strive to discover the extraordinary inherent in the ordinary. As a traveller, I strive to push myself out my comfort zone at every opportunity. My advice on how to do both? Get lost. Put the guidebook down. Go for a walk. Eat something weird. Talk to people.
Since 2012, I’ve worked in media development in Sierra Leone, covered the Canadian troops under fire in Alberta, and freelanced my way across East Africa. My print, TV, and radio work has been published by news outlets all over the world, including CBC, CTV, BBC, CBS, Slate, VICE, Kenya’s Daily Nation, The Globe and Mail, and dpa International. In 2015, my work on Uganda’s burgeoning cinema industry was nominated for an AITO Young Travel Writer of the Year award, and in 2016, I was nominated for outstanding investigative reporting award from the Canadian Association of Journalists, and co-won a Canadian Online Publishing Award.

After covering the Al-Shebaab terrorist attacks in Garissa, Kenya, I moved back to Canada to work as an investigative reporter for the National Observer, an independent news site focused on federal politics. I currently live in Ottawa, where I run back and forth between Parliament Hill and coffee shops, scribbling away to meet deadlines. Feel free to get in touch with any story ideas or projects I may be interested in.
