Who is Elizabeth?

“Wandering re-establishes the original harmony which once existed between man and the universe.” — Anatole France

I love being a journalist. I love meeting new people, sharing their stories and shining a light on dark places where human rights are shelved for power and profit. Between business hours, I’m the proud target of public vitriol in print, online and over the air. But when I’m feeling a little more unscripted, my heart, soul and coffee-stained notes — scribbled on the road — go into my travel blog. I aspire not only to provide some perspective on roads less travelled, but some useful travel itineraries for beginner, intermediate and advanced adventurers. I like to think this website is unique among travel blogs because I seldom travel as a tourist: I often live in a country or work there, which gives me different experience and insight from your average wanderlust blogger.

Time to put the guidebook down.

I’m an award-winning journalist from Canada. Oui, je parle français aussi. Since 2012, I’ve reported from seven countries across North America, Central America and Africa, covering everything from burgeoning Ugandan kung fu movie stars to deadly Al-Shebaab terrorist attacks. For the last three years, I’ve worked as an investigative journalist on Canada’s Parliament Hill, uncovering complex political and corporate misdeeds, along with human rights violations in the extractive sector.

Today, I live in northwestern Ontario, training Indigenous reporters in the Asubpeeschoseewagong First Nation with Journalists for Human Rights. I’m dreaming up my next big adventure, and through the pages of this blog, hope you’ll join me.
